Classifier types

All Caravel classifiers belong to one of three types: Category, Intent, or Topic. These types help provide meaning and context to classifications found in your data feeds.

Categories

Category type classifiers capture customer needs and feelings about your product or service. Caravel comes with four pre-built category classifiers, Complaint, Compliment, Question, and Suggestion. Category classifiers are currently only supported as pre-built models.

Intents

Intent type classifiers capture a customer's purpose for the conversation. For example, Caravel provides pre-built intent models like Upgrade, which finds instances of your customers intending to upgrade a software component or billing plan.

Topics

Topic type classifiers capture conversation subjects happening in your data feeds. These are less subtle than categories and intents, but more focused to your specific business. Caravel provides pre-built topic models and a training set library to help you identify common patterns in your feeds.

Training custom classifiers

Each time you add a unique training text to your classifier, you greatly improve the quality and frequency of insights found in your data feeds. Caravel provides a progress guide to help determine how your classifier is performing—try for 20 training texts to start!

Pre-built models

Classifiers using Caravel's pre-built models use deep learning to provide high-quality predictions. Caravel will update and retrain these models periodically so you're always working with the latest.

Pre-training classifiers

In many cases, you don't need to start from scratch to begin tracking intents and topics across all of your support feeds. Caravel provides a growing list of quality datasets to help bootstrap your classifiers. To take advantage of our training set library, head to Caravel Hub, and choose to pre-train your classifier.
